the crows here will often play a game of catch where someone will carry something soft (note the bit of rotted wood in beak), drop it mid flight and then try catch it before it strikes the ground. sometimes another crow will intercept the object and it turns into a game of keep away.
brittle objects are sometimes dropped just to watch them smash below. this has been the fate of many a chunk of frozen snow.
i chuck away a lot. especially with this type of shot and not having SLR style focus (phase detect).
i normally prefocus and expose to where i think the bird will be. lock focus and wait. the r1 has a 3 shot burst (jpeg only) so i use that to up my chances of something usable.

if i may aska question, about how many shots do yuo take before you get one that is a "keeper"
